pas devant les enfants

I've finished marking Manuel's book and he is still hanging around my desk as I start going through Marianna's book.

Marianna: Mr. Kay would you not give us homework tonight please.

Me: Because.....?

Marianna: Because I have to go to my sister's graduation tonight.

Me: How old is your sister?

Marianna: She's 22.

Manuel: 22! 22 and she's just graduating High School!

Marianna: She's graduating from university.

Me: Think Manuel! I mean, how many years would she have had to repeat to graduate at the age of 22?

Marianna: Three. Just like her boyfriend.

Me: Pardon?

Marianna: Her boyfriend hasn't graduated from High School yet. He's had to repeat three years.

Me: I bet your parents never mention that.

Marianna: No. They mention it all the time. In fact they shout it most of the time.

Me: Yes, they probably do.
